Props And Products

3D Scanning, Cleanup and Retopology examples of VFX props, VR assets and product visualisation projects.

Video Breakdown

Good Thins

Several crackers scanned for a food commercial showing the crackers and ingredients (vegetables) floating in the air. 3D scans were done using photogrammetry, scanning each side of a cracker separately and combining both halves in post.

ASUS ROG Chakram Core

This mouse was scanned for a product visualization VFX shot using a Creaform Handyscan 700 hand-held laser scanning after spraying the product with Spot Check powder spray.

PUMA IGNITE FASTEN8 DISC Spikeless Golf Shoes

Shoes scanned using my Creaform Handyscan 700 and retopologized as individual components for easy texture and shader creation and assignment. I scanned both this model and the one with the laces.

Statue for reproduction

3D Scanned statue using photogrammetry and GOM inspect to remove any surface noise. It was scaled to its final dimensions and made watertight to it can be 3D printed.

Food Packaging

Container scanned using hand-held laser scanner. It was retopologized and UVed to match the original packaging illustrator files. Doing it that way allowed my client to cycle through the various packaging colors and designs.

Footjoy

Scanned using Creaform Handyscan 700, a hand-held laser scanner. The whole shoe was retopologized in different pieces to make texturing and shader assignment a lot easier than if it were a single continuous model.

Pipe Butt Fusion Machine for VR Simulator

To scan this machine I disconnected all the wiring and disassembled it to the very last screw. Each piece was individually retopologized and reassembled in its original position. All materials were recreated using Substance Painter.

VW Tiguan Wheel Replacement

This wheel was scanned for VFX replacement in a car commercial. The rim was scanned in its entirety and retopologized. The tire treads were only scanned partially using the Creaform Handyscan 700 and repeated to make a full circle. The details on the side of the tire were too small to scan so I used photometric stereo with several lighting angles to achieve the fine normal map detail instead.

Morse Telegraph

This original historic piece was scanned using a laser scanner and photogrammetry. The laser data was used to capture the accurate shape and dimensions and the photogrammetry for its high quality color information. This project was done so the client could 3D print a reproduction for educational purposes. You can tell that all the components are intersecting to some degree. This is to ensure there are no gaps which would make the reproduction brittle or fall apart. The model seen here is only an intermediary one with the final asset being a high resolution single mesh without any intersecting geometry which could be sliced and printed.

KIA Interior

Kia interior was scanned using a hand-held laser scanner. It was then retopologized and UVed to be used on the KIA website.
